Established in 2022 by Irish whiskey enthusiast David O Connell, Whiskey on the Tracks combines two passions of David’s, with the marriage of Irish whiskey and travel by steam train.
David was keen to try and create a whiskey tasting experience like no other, and in late 2021 reached out to the Railway Preservation Society of Ireland (R.P.S.I.) to have a discussion about the possibility of hosting a whiskey tasting event on board one of their scheduled services. As a result of this conversation the first ever ‘Whiskey on the Tracks’ departed Dublin Connolly Station, Co. Dublin on the 26th of March 2022 at 14:00 on a return journey to Maynooth, Co.Kildare.
On this memorable day sixty-four passengers boarded carriage G, via red carpet, to take their seats on the R.P.S.I. Craven class carriage, to be brought under steam power by locomotive No.85 ‘Merlin’ on a return journey to Maynooth railway station. While on board they were treated to a specially selected flight of Irish Whiskey curated by Irish Distillers, Gerard Garland, who was also on board to guide the passengers through his railway connected Irish whiskeys.
As a result of the overwhelmingly positive feedback from the passengers on this memorable journey, with one quoted as saying “Probably the best whiskey tasting experience I’ve had”, ‘Whiskey on the Tracks’ was founded.
Since that inaugural journey on March 26th David has been working on putting a timetable together to offer fans of whiskey, steam travel and people from all walks of life the chance to experience an unforgettable journey with ‘Whiskey on the Tracks’
In 2022 ‘Whiskey on the Tracks’ will continue on board the regular R.P.S.I. scheduled services, with journeys planned to Wicklow and Kilkenny already confirmed and David hopes to add more to the timetable before the year is out.
David hopes to see you for a ‘Whiskey on the Tracks’ some day in the future.
